The Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (CCR2P), based at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, is recruiting graduate students in relevant programs to join its R2P Scholars Network as Junior Fellows. Any graduate student pursuing degrees in law, public policy, Master’s, Ph.D, SJD, and other subjects related to the study of R2P is welcome to apply.
The CCR2P is an independent, non-partisan, and non-profit research organization, which promotes scholarly engagement with and political implementation of the R2P principle. Responsibility to Protect is a principle first coined in 2001 under the leadership of the Canadian government and later adopted by 150 heads of state and government in 2005 at the World Summit Outcome. R2P states that if the state is unable or unwilling to protect its people from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, the international community has the responsibility to do so.
Successful candidates to our Junior Fellowship Program will be invited to broaden and deepen their research by working within Canada’s foremost R2P research institute. They will also become members in our extensive network involving prominent Senior Fellows from across the globe. Some may also be invited to join or establish one of our CCR2P chapters in their university communities, which extend across the nation. Scholars from outside of Canada are also welcome to apply, provided that their research involves R2P or related subjects such as refugees, IDPs, peacekeeping, protection of civilians, etc.
If possible, we ask that you please distribute the attached call for applications to all graduate and doctoral students in your program and encourage interested students to apply. Interested candidates should submit a 1-page statement of interest, a full CV, a short bio (3-5 lines), and a scholarly writing sample related to international affairs (or if possible R2P in particular) to “firstname.lastname@example.org” with [Junior Fellowship Application – Full Name] in the subject line by 11:59 PM (ET) on July 15th, 2016. The fellowship will begin on September 6th, 2016 for a one-year term, subject to renewal.
