Global investment bank Morgan Stanley in a 2010 report argues that between 2013-15 India will outpace China in terms of economic growth. Largely due to demographic factors, China’s growth is likely to slow down from 10 to 8% and India’s to rise from 7 to 9%. So is India poised to be next economic giant, rivalling and competing with China ? Even as the macroeconomic pre-conditions for economic take-off appear to be in place, the flip side is continuing poverty, hunger, child-malnutrition, discrimination in addition to a poorly educated workforce and rising inequality. So even as India’s elite have successfully targeted growth, hundreds of millions have been left behind without the capabilities to gain from globalisation. Oddly enough, the problem is an economic and political elite that does not take democracy seriously.
